Ryan Reynolds‘ Welsh fifth-tier side Wrexham came close to a Hollywood achievement in the FA Cup as they drew 3-3 with Championship side Sheffield United on Sunday evening.
Wrexham are three divisions lower than Sheffield United who were recently a Premier League side but it took a stoppage-time equaliser for them to stay in the tournament.
“I have mixed emotions, as you can imagine, but we were outstanding. We showed character, heart and quality,” the Canadian actor said after the match.
The club is co-owned by the Hollywood actor with Rob McElhenney and they will play a replay for a place in the last 16 of the FA Cup.
Ryan Reynolds aims for the top
Ryan Reynolds is very optimistic about the future of his Wrexham and does not rule out seeing the Welsh club in the Premier League in a decade.
“In 10 years’ time the plan has and always will be the Premier League,” Reynolds explained. “If it’s theoretically possible to go from the fifth tier to the Premier League, why wouldn’t we try?
“Nobody has ever done anything great in this world thinking: ‘You know what, let’s go halfway’, so let’s go all the way and we believe we can do that. Call us crazy, but that’s what we want to do.”
Reynolds spoke before the game to the BBC and said: “I get nervous because a match like today, Sheffield United are three leagues above us, 70 teams above us, this is an extraordinary moment, classic David and Goliath.”
