Aston Villa‘s star striker Ollie Watkins is gunning for the Premier League Player of the Season with a little help from the pop realm-none other than the Swifties! Yes, you heard it right, Taylor Swift’s die-hard fans are being rallied to support Watkins in his quest for the prestigious soccer accolade.
Watkins, who has had a stellar season scoring 19 goals and delivering 12 assists in 35 appearances, became the center of a social media campaign when a Villa fan and self-proclaimed Swiftie took to X to urge Taylor’s fans to back the footballer. The tweet appealing to Swift’s fanbase highlighted Watkins’ admiration for the pop superstar, even claiming he jams to her new album #TTPD every morning.
Adding more sparkle to this star-studded campaign, Watkins’ girlfriend, Ellie Alderson, jumped into the fray by retweeting the post, amplifying the call for Swiftie support.
Villa’s current standing could see them heading to the Champions League, as they sit comfortably in fourth place, outpacing Tottenham by seven points. But the road to Player of the Season won’t be a walk in the park for Watkins. He’s up against heavy hitters like Phil Foden and last year’s winner, Erling Haaland from Manchester City, as well as Arsenal‘s dynamic duo Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice. Not to forget Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, and Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, all of whom are vying for the same honor.
Taylor Swift fans impact more than just music charts
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Swift’s fans have ventured into the sports arena. Last year, Swifties dramatically shifted the scales in the 2023 Golden Boy Web award, propelling Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham to victory after a public declaration of dislike for Swift’s music by competitor Alejandro Balde of Barcelona. Bellingham’s votes skyrocketed from 30% to an overwhelming 89% after Swifties stepped in.
As the Premier League season winds down, all eyes will be on whether the Swifties can repeat history and help Watkins clinch the title.
