This past weekend, although Real Madrid did not have a match scheduled, their star forward, Vinicius Jr., found himself in the spotlight across Spain due to the two main games held in Barcelona and Madrid.
Both FC Barcelona’s home match against Espanyol and Atletico Madrid’s clash with Las Palmas turned into platforms for fans to mock Vinicius, who recently missed out on winning the prestigious Ballon d’Or.
Capturing the scenes, Movistar+ cameras showed fans chanting phrases like “Vinicius, beach ball” during the matches, an attempt to playfully jab at the Real Madrid star.
It became evident that the rivalry runs deep, with Vinicius’s Ballon d’Or loss adding fuel to the fans’ teasing.
A tough week for Vinicius
Vinicius had been considered one of the favourites to win the Ballon d’Or this year. His incredible achievements with Real Madrid, including winning La Liga and the Champions League, had many people expecting the Brazilian to lift the award.
Leading up to the ceremony, numerous predictions and media coverage favoured Vinicius as the winner. He had showcased his talent throughout the season, even scoring in the Champions League final, adding weight to his candidacy.
Yet, despite the high hopes and the widespread speculation, the honour went to Rodri. The Spanish midfielder became only the second Spanish player to win the prestigious accolade.
The unexpected result led to a surge of media attention and even sparked criticism from Real Madrid, whose representatives felt disappointed by the outcome.
This disappointment was shared by Vinicius’s supporters, but it turned into a source of amusement for his detractors. Over the weekend, these rival fans took the opportunity to mock the Brazilian winger in their own stadiums.
At both Montjuïc, where Barcelona played Espanyol, and the Metropolitano, where Atletico faced Las Palmas, fans directed chants and taunts at Vinicius, making it clear that they relished the fact that he had missed out on the Ballon d’Or.
