Chancel Mbemba (30) was spotted training with the Olympique de Marseille first team for the first time this season on Friday morning. The Congolese international had been forced to train with the reserves after the club were keen to sell the former Newcastle centre-back this summer.
However, despite returning to training, it will be unlikely that Marseille will rely on the defender in the near future. The centre-back still remains in conflict with the club and has contacted the LFP to appeal a financial sanction that Les Phocéens have imposed on him.
La Provence also notes that while Mbemba is physically part of the training sessions the defender has still not been invited to video sessions or the tactical set-ups. His manager, Roberto De Zerbi, shed more light on the situation during the Friday press conference ahead of this weekend’s match against Montpellier HSC. The Italian stated, “In truth, Chancel’s situation has not changed.”
Chancel Mbemba faces little chance of playing for Marseille again
There is a chance if injuries occur that Mbemba could eventually be called upon to play although this is not guaranteed even if Marseille suffer an injury crisis in the middle of defence. For now, the centre-back trains with his teammates but has little chance of making the matchday squad.
