There have been several unforgettable moments from WWE in 2024. While there have been memorable matches, some segments and small moments in particular fans haven’t forgotten about. Interestingly, these moments are made even more special if they were not scripted to happen in the first place.
It’s no secret that although the injuries and bruises in professional wrestling are real, it is still scripted and all for entertainment. Match winners are predetermined and everything each superstar says is written beforehand. However, some of the sport’s most memorable and controversial moments happen without a script like the infamous Montreal Screwjob, the MSG Curtain Call, The Undertaker chokeslamming Mankind through Hell in a Cell, and more.
For this list, we will look at five unscripted moments that took place in WWE this year.
#5. Carlito’s controversial comments about Damage CTRL
The October 21 episode of WWE RAW featured a short backstage interaction between Carlito and two members of Damage CTRL, IYO SKY and Kairi Sane. Just as both women were exiting Adam Pearce’s office, The Judgment Day member entered and stated that he had “to learn Chinese.”
Fans didn’t receive this comment well as both women were Japanese. Reports later emerged that this line wasn’t even on the script for the episode and the company had to cut it out when posting the clip on social media. It was also mentioned that some higher-ups were in disbelief that this was said, but SKY and Sane reportedly didn’t take any offense to the comment as they just viewed it as him playing an “idiot” character.
#4. CM Punk hits his opponents before the start of WarGames
This year’s Men’s WWE WarGames featured a match between the OG Bloodline and New Bloodline, with CM Punk joining the former while Bronson Reed joined the latter. Interestingly, the action began immediately when Punk was making his entrance, as he pushed Reed’s face, who was already locked inside the cage.
When The Voice of the Voiceless pushed Bronson, the screen momentarily went black. It was later reported that this action wasn’t part of a script and was something he did on the fly.
#3. Dominik Mysterio kisses Liv Morgan at WWE SummerSlam
At this year’s SummerSlam, Liv Morgan defended the Women’s World Championship against Rhea Ripley. The champion managed to retain due to some help from Dominik Mysterio, who sealed the betrayal by kissing Morgan after the match.
Dominik later revealed that the kiss wasn’t part of the initial plan and was only thought of two hours before it happened. Aside from presumably Liv Morgan, the only person who had an idea it was going to happen was Finn Balor.
#2. Cody Rhodes pointing at Roman Reigns during WWE Royal Rumble 2024
Cody Rhodes made history by becoming one of the few people who won the Royal Rumble more than once and he did so back-to-back. Following the match, he pointed at Roman Reigns, who was sitting in the audience, to warn him that he would be the champion he planned to choose for WrestleMania XL.
As many may know, this led to The Rock returning to initially challenge Roman Reigns for the Undisputed title at ‘Mania before fans chimed in that they wanted Cody instead. This eventually led to Rhodes challenging Reigns and winning at the Premium Live Event. Interestingly, the action that started it all, the pointing at Roman, wasn’t even supposed to happen.
On Busted Open Radio, Cody revealed that he only knew about The Rock vs Roman on the day of the Royal Rumble. Triple H confirmed this on WrestleMania XL: Behind the Curtain documentary but despite this, Rhodes went into business for himself and pointed at Reigns instead of Seth Rollins, which is why The Original Tribal Chief was looking a bit confused when it happened.
#1. The Rock continued beating up Cody Rhodes after WWE RAW wrapped up
One of the most brutal moments from the Stamford-based promotion of this year was when The Rock made an unannounced surprise appearance on RAW and attacked Cody at the end of the episode, which saw Rhodes bloodied and bruised in the parking lot.
Although this segment was planned, Dwayne Johnson decided to take it up a notch by continuing the attacks when the cameras stopped rolling. In a video posted by The Final Boss, he was heard saying “Your script? F*ck that!” when a WWE producer stated that they were no longer live on air and the show was over.
