John Cena will compete in the final WrestleMania match of his storied WWE career in 2025. With three-and-a-half months until WrestleMania 41, wrestling legend Matt Hardy gave his opinion on the latest reports about Cena’s possible opponent.
According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, Cena is set to face Cody Rhodes at this year’s Show of Shows. The two-night event will take place on April 19-20 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
On The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy, Hardy said a Cena vs. Rhodes match makes sense due to both men’s status as the face of WWE:
“It would certainly be an intriguing match because you have John Cena, the GOAT, the polarizing GOAT, and now you have Cody Rhodes, who will probably end up as the new polarizing GOAT a year down the road. He’s the guy that is the face of the company here in the company right now.” [53:30 – 53:45]
On January 6, Cena will return to WWE television on the first episode of RAW on Netflix. He is expected to compete in several matches throughout 2025 before retiring at the end of the year.
Matt Hardy on John Cena’s 2025 WWE opponents
Earlier in the podcast, Matt Hardy explained why he would book John Cena to beat Drew McIntyre at SummerSlam to become a 17-time world champion.
Hardy also named World Heavyweight Champion Gunther as a possible title opponent for Cena in 2025:
“Gunther would have been my second pick behind Drew.” [54:08 – 54:10]
Hardy has not appeared in WWE since his contract expired in 2020. Amid talk of a possible Hardy Boyz WWE reunion, the 50-year-old addressed whether he could return with his brother Jeff in 2025.
